Love Aaj Kal trailer review: It has been a long time that Bollywood has come out with a nice feel-good rom-com. As a cinephile, who has grown up watching Karan Johar and Imtiaz Ali films, Love Aaj Kal (2) was one film that promised to bring exactly that to the table.
After all, it is a ride down the memory lane to a much-loved film that originally starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. The fact that it is directed by Imtiaz Ali and is the first film of new-age rumoured couple Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan only adds to the excitement.
The much-awaited trailer of Love Aaj Kal dropped today and, sadly, it is a dull affair. Centred around 2 love stories set in different milleu, i.e 1990 and 2020, Love Aaj Kal feels like the original film but with a new faces and less of emotions. While the 1990s version features Kartik Aaryan with newcomer Arushi Sharma and their subtle romance, the 2020 version features the former with Sara Ali Khan and modern age dating dilemmas.
The whirlwind romance between Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan translates on-screen but that’s about it. Despite being a 2020 love story, Love Aaj Kal lacks the passion, fire and emotions. The story failed to move me as an audience and bring something new to the table.
While Kartik Aaryan shows promise in certain emotional scenes, Sara Ali Khan’s performance lacks emotional depth. Just like his last few films, Kartik again plays a love-torn man in this film emotionally tortured by the women in his life, as so it seems. Let alone the story, the songs are also old chartbusters copy pasted in the new film.
Here’s me hoping that atleast the film will be better than this trailer. But, again, we can only keep our fingers crossed. Slated for a Valentine’s Day release, Love Aaj Kal will enjoy a solo release on February 14, 2020.
