After the Modi government booked former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah under the Public Safety Act (PSA), former Finance Minister P Chidambaram comes out to bat for them. Taking on the government, Congress stalwart P. Chidambaram, in a tweet, said the detention without charges is the worst abomination in a democracy. He added PM Modi has forgotten history and examples of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.
Chidambaram called the government’s move to impose PSA on Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah a shocking and devastating step. He asked when unjust laws are passed or invoked, what option do the people have than to protest peacefully?
The Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978, is a stringent J&K law that gives power to the government to detain any person without a trial for up to 2 years. Both the former J&K Chief Ministers have been slapped with the same.
Former IAS turned politician, Shah Faesal has been detained with the same charges and it is over 6 months now that he has been under detention.
After the former Finance Minister’s reaction, the social media users divided among supports and critics. A few people agreed with Congress leader’s stand while a few asked him to recall the time when he was the home minister and had ordered to hurl batons on the protesters sitting at the Ramleela Maidan.
Another user said the time for talks and debates is over. A few crossed the line and said the citizens of India don’t need advice from a criminal.
