The Capital is all set to go to the polls on Saturday and elect their representatives for the 70-member house. Reports said around 1.78 crore voters including 81.05 lakh male, 66.8 lakh female, and 869 third-gender voters will be eligible to cast vote this time.
Although the political parties had started preparation for the Delhi elections much earlier In the last 30 days, the city saw several intense campaigns, hate speeches, mega roadshows and rallies by the BJP, the AAP and the Congress. The parties tried their best to woo the voters and set the winning momentum for their party candidates.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has been asking people to vote for his party on the basis of work his government has done in the last 5 years. AAP ministers have been thumping chest in the name of betterment of schools and hospitals, free water and subsidized electricity, installation of CCTV cameras, free bus rides to women ahead.
While contrary to that BJP has been seeking support in the name of nationalism. The saffron front deployed over 272 MPs and 40 Union Minister in Delhi to convince voters. Throughout the campaign, there have been several incidents when BJP firebrand leaders crossed the line and gave inappropriate statements, after which, the Election Commission slapped bans on them.
The list includes Delhi MP Parvesh Verma, MoS Anurag Thakur, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, MP Giriraj Singh.
Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, where the protesters against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are sitting from the last 54 days, was the most discussed and coined issue for BJP. Saffron leaders have been claiming that all who are sitting at Shaheen Bagh are anti-nationals. West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma went a step ahead and said that they are the people who will enter your house and rape your mothers, sisters, and daughters.
This was not the lone shocking statement he gave, Verma also called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal a terrorist.
His friend, MoS Anurag Thakur was the second one to abuse the Shaheen Bagh protesters. In a public gathering, Thakur provoked people to say Desh Kay Gaddaro Ko…Goli Marro S**lo Ko…(Shoot the anti-nationals).
After this, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath entered the big picture and accused Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal of supporting and supplying Biryani to the Shaheen Bagh protesters.
Another firebrand BJP leader who is famous for direct attacks, MP Giriraj Singh said people who are sitting at Shaheen Bach would turn into human bombs soon.
It won’t be wrong to say that BJP’s entire campaign was about communal polarization, nationalism and Shaheen Bagh.
Not only BJP, but the election commission also sent a notice to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal too. Reports said AAP convenor had posted a video of himself on February 3 that violated the model code of conduct.
