Kerala has identified the 3rd case of a patient with the novel coronavirus. Like the other 2, the third case is also a student from Wuhan, which has become the centre of the virus, now classified a global health emergency by the WHO. The virus has killed some 350 people in China.
The Union Health ministry said the new patient has been kept in isolation and the health of the patient is stable. The southern state had reported a second case yesterday from Alappuzha. KK Shailaja, the Kerala health minister, had said the student had been to Wuhan, China. The minister had said the student was stable and was yet to develop serious symptoms associated with the disease. The health report results were awaited, she said. Along with the patient, the family members have also been placed in isolation, she said.
Till now, there have been 361 confirmed deaths due to the virus in China. Almost 12,000 people have been identified to have the virus in various stages. Reports said the virus had spread to 24 countries including US, Thailand, Japan and South Korea. The death of one person in Philippines had caused alarm in the island country.
In Kerala, 70 people have been kept in isolation wards across the state. The Union Health Ministry has asked people who have been to China from January 1 to report to their nearest government hospital if having fever, cough and breathing trouble.
International media reports were speculating whether China will seek medical assistance from the United States, with some saying Beijing is likely to approach the European Union instead since any request from Washington will only arm the invective spewed against China by US President Donald Trump. Reports said the Group of 7 developed countries were discussing strategy to take on the epidemic with the German Health Minister Jens Spahn saying there had to be concerted action since individual action by any country would not be able to contain it in on European soil.
