Nirbhaya convicts hanging: Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi has blasted senior Supreme Court lawyer Indira Jaising for requesting the former to forgive the four convicts of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape incident. Reacting to Indira’s suggestion, Asha said that she cannot believe how the lawyer dared to suggest her.
Slamming Indira, the 23-year-old rape victim’s mother said that it is because of the lawyers like her that rape victims are not getting justice, instead incidents like Delhi gang-rape are rising in the country.
Asha asked when the whole country wants convicts to be hanged who was Indira to give a suggestion? She also said that lawyers like Indira earn their livelihood by speaking for rapists.
Indira had taken to her Twitter on Friday, urging Asha to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini Murugan, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassin. She stated that she was with Asha but she was only against the death penalty.
This comes a day after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected Mukesh Singh’s mercy petition after recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Singh is one of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case. The move was welcomed by Nirbhaya’s father who said that their hopes had gone up. Their execution was due on January 22 but it was delayed after 32-year-old Singh filed a mercy petition.
Akshay Kumar Singh (31), Vinay Sharma (26), and Pawan Gupta (25) are the other three convicts in the case that had shocked the nation. Prior to the President’s rejection of the mercy petition, Nirbhaya’s mother slammed the political parties for failing to give her justice.
Asha said that those who had supported her after the 2012 rape incident are playing with the death of her daughter for political gains. She also targetted Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who had asked they would execute the convicts if they get control over Delhi Police.
