India vs West Indies, 1st ODI held at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai in which the West Indies team won the match comfortably, thanks to the brilliant centuries from Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. Windies team chased down the target of 288 in just 47.5 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Shimron Hetmyer smashed 139 runs in just 106 balls, the destructive left-hander along Shai Hope added 218 runs for the second wicket that put the Windies team in the commanding position. Mohammed Shami got the breakthrough for India but the damage was already done. Shai Hope’s steady innings of 102 runs guided Windies to get the 1-0 lead in three ODIs series.
West Indies after winning the toss decided to bowl first. Indian opener KL Rahul and skipper Virat Kohli took the early exit got out in the same over bowled by Sheldon Cottrell. Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer added 55 runs for the third wicket, but Alzarri Joseph dismissed Rohit Sharma on the score of 36 runs.
After the departure of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant joined Shreyas Iyer and took the control of the innings. Both the batsmen played some delightful shots that got the crowd going at the Chepauk Stadium. Rishabh Pant after getting immense support from the team management finally stood for the team and scored 71 runs in 69 balls with the help of 7 fours’ and a six. Iyer also played brilliantly and smashed 70 runs in 88 balls. Windies bowlers brought things under the control and restricted India under 300.
Windies chase didn’t start well as they lost Sunil Ambris early in the innings. After that, it was all about Shimron Hetmyer who smashed Indian bowlers all around the park. Indian bowlers lacked discipline and gave away too many runs that put the Windies team in the commanding position.
It was a day that Indian bowlers would like to forget and work hard on the mistakes at the same time. The only positive in this match for the Indian team was Rishab’s return to the form. Apart from this, it was a miserable day for the Indian team. The second match of the series will be played in Vishakhapatnam on Wednesday, December 18.
