Rape and murder accused Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh currently serving a 20-year-jail sentence, is being physically as well as mentally tortured in jail, claims petitioner Mohit Gupta who moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against Rohtak jail administration. Ram Rahim is serving sentences in the Sunaria jail.
Alleging torture, the petitioner raised safety concerns for the Dera Sacha Sauda founder claiming that he was being deprived of rights of a jail inmate. The petitioner added that Ram Rahim wasn’t allowed to meet anyone nor was he allowed to make/take phone calls.
The petitioner also claimed that the jail authorities also refused him information on the jail inmates’ rights under the Right to Information Act.

To prove his claim further, Gupta wrote in the petition that Sunaria jail despite being a high-security zone had no control over gang wars and surveillance was also make-believe given the continuous recovery of mobile phones by the jail authorities.
Fearing threat to Ram Rahim’s life, Gupta has raised concerns citing dreadful criminals lodged in the jail. He urged the court to ensure that Ram Rahim is produced before the court. He also alleged that the jail superintendent didn’t let him meet the Dera founder.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court is yet to hear the matter. Meanwhile, the court registry has already listed the case for hearing.
Further, the petitioner also claimed that a politician pressurised Ram Rahim to campaign for his party during this year’s Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, the court had denied him parole for his daughter’s marriage.
He is facing trial in two rape cases and one murder case for his alleged involvement in killing the journalist. He has also been booked for the murder of Dera follower Ranjit Singh. The 51-year-old self-proclaimed Godman is also accused of castration of followers.
Ram Rahim was convicted in 2017 in connection with two rape cases following which he was sentenced 20-year jail sentence. The Dera Sacha Sauda followers staged a violent protest and resorted to weapons against media and the police. As a result, over 40 people died while several others were left injured.
