India vs Australia Ist ODI: Australia skipper Aaron Finch, who along with David Warner hammered India at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, said that the dismissal of KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan was the turning point in the game that Aussies won by 10 wickets. Finch said that India would have posted a big total if Rahul-Dhawan duo had stayed at the crease for long.
Opener Dhawan ended up scoring 74 while Rahul made 47. After India got an early blow when Mitchell Starc dismissed Rohit Sharma (10), Rahul joined Dhawan who returned to the team-fold after several months. He had been ruled out of several series due to his injury.
Both the batsmen scored a 12-run partnership which had laid the foundation for a challenging total. However, the middle-order, which witnessed Virat Kohli coming at No 4, failed to impress. Rahul departed in the 28th over while Dhawan gave away his wicket in the next over.
After the dismissal of the duo, no other player could cross the 28-run mark. Rishabh Pant scored (28), Ravindra Jadeja (25), Kuldeep Yadav (17), Shardul Thakur (13), Mohammed Shami (10) and Shreyas Iyer (4). Skipper Kohli made 16.
For Australia, Starch with impressive 3-56, remained the leading wicket-taker. Pat Cummins and Kane Richardson claimed two each wicket. Adam Zamp and Ashton Asgar got one each.
It was Australia’s first-ever 10-wicket victory against the Men in Blue thanks to Warner’s 128* and Finch’s 110*. Warner also became the fastest Australian to score 5000 runs in the 50-over format. He achieved the feat in 117 matches (115 innings.) Former South Africa opener Hashim Amla tops the list of scoring fastest 5000 ODI runs. He took 101 innings to achieve the milestone.
Meanwhile, the second match of the series will be played on Friday, January 17, at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. It will be a do-or-die situation for the hosts to stay alive in the series. While the Kangaroos will try to seal the series.
