Sara Pilot, the sister of detained National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, has moved a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court on Monday against the detention of her brother. Omar Abdullah was detained along with 2 other former CMs, his father Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Deomcratic Party, on August 5, 2019, the day the Centre revoked Article 370 of the Constitution. Though Omar Abdullah’s detention was to end on February 5, the union territory government has imposed the Public Safety Act on him and under which he can now be detained for upto another year.

The PSA was also invoked on Mehbooba Mufti, the same day. The dossier on the basis of which the PSA detention has been carried out said Omar Abdullah has the ability to influence public opinion to the point of asking Kashmiri voters to cast their ballots even under peak militancy when the terrorist outfits had called for boycott of elections.

Given that Omar Abdullah and his party has been in alliance with national parties like the Congress and the BJP, the dossier has surprised many with its underlining his influence against terrorist diktats. The dossier, which notes his influence, reads that he has a position of power where he can cause people to rebel against the government’s decision.

The dossier said the National Conference leader is planning activities against the Union government in the guise of politics.

Sara Pilot’s petition said Omar Abdullah’s detention is a violation of his constitutional rights and called the dossier ridiculous since it used his popularity and influence over people to make them vote and turned it against the leader.

Kapil Sibal, who appeared for Sara Pilot, sought an urgent hearing in the court.
