Rape in India Remark: BJP MPs on Friday attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remark that India had become the rape capital of the world. In a tweet, Gandhi said today that under PM Narendra Modi’s watch the Northeast was caught in a spiral of violence. He drew attention to the rising rape cases in the country saying that Narendra Modi’s Make in India has been converted to a Rape in India nowadays. The Congress leaders remark triggered a blistering uproar in the Lok Sabha with the BJP accusing him of insulting all women.
Attacking Rahul Gandhi over his comments, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, for the first time ever in Indian history, a Gandhi is inviting people to come and rape women in India. Rahul Gandhi had made the India rape capital remark in an election rally in Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, several MPs, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, raised slogans and demanded an apology from the Congress leader. Singh added that such members have no moral right to be a part of the Lok Sabha. Proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 12pm.
Rahul Gandhi, who was stopped from giving his response in the Lok Sabha by Speaker Om Birla, told media outside that he won’t apologize. He said what he had said is that PM Modi keeps boasting about Make In India but when sees the newspapers, all one sees are cases of rapes these days.
The last few weeks have seen distressing news including the rape and murder of Hyderabad veterinary surgeon by a truck driver and his helpers. The accused were then killed in an early morning encounter when they attempted to escape police custody during a reconstruction of the crime, according to Hyderabad police. Similarly, the death of a rape victim from Unnao, who was set afire by 4 of her rapists, had also shocked the country.
